September 7:
Lamberti's
Hello everyone,
Technically, I guess this is our first "fall" tasting, coming the
day after Labor Day. I hope you will all be able to join us for
what will be a memorable event. Our chapter is very pleased to host
representatives from two of the best known names in Germany: Ernst
Loosen and Robert Weil. Mr Ian Dick of Loosen Brothers will pour the
wines of J.L. Wolf, Loosen's Pfalz estate. Founded in 1756, the J.L.
Wolf estate was a very successful and highly regarded winery for
more than two centuries. It entered an especially glamorous era with
the construction of its Italianate estate house and villa in 1843.
In the latter years of the 20th century, however, the estate
languished, lacking a firm hand to guide its wine production. Ernst
Loosen, of the Dr. Loosen estate, took over the vineyards in 1996,
launching a dramatic turnaround in the estate’s quality and
reputation. His goal at J.L. Wolf is to make powerful, traditionally
crafted Pfalz wines to complement his lighter Dr. Loosen wines from
the Mosel. The Pfalz region has a long tradition with other grape
varieties, allowing Ernst to expand his winemaking palette to
include Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer and
Silvaner.
Thomas Chaffin will be pouring the wines of the Robert Weil Estate.
Founded in 1875, Weingut Robert Weil is considered to be one of the
Rheingau’s younger wine estates. It is located in the heart of
Kiedrich, a village first documented in the year 950. Kiedrich
Turmberg and Kiedrich Gräfenberg, the estate’s top vineyards, are
among the finest sites in the Rheingau.
The estate cultivates 70 hectares (173 acres) of
vineyards, of which 98 percent are planted with Riesling. Today,
Wilhelm Weil, the great-grandson of the estate’s founder, carries on
the tradition of uncompromising, quality-oriented vineyard and
cellar practices – a tradition that has been the hallmark of the
winery for four generations. The character of Robert Weil Rieslings
is marked by the mineral-rich soils of the vineyards. These elegant,
complex wines offer pronounced fruitiness with nuanced flavors and
bouquets. They embody a perfect interplay of fine yet firm acidity
with natural sweetness and extract.

2007 Pinot Gris

Chapter has enjoyed the wonderful service and outstanding food at
this location for the past several years. We have reserved their
beautiful wine cellar tasting room on the lower floor. For this
event, a cold anti pasta and hot appetizers served family style will
be included with the tasting. Additionally, the restaurant will
offer our attendees a special, 3 course, $35 menu that you may enjoy

All Society members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption
can lead to intoxication and therefore Society members and their
guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. We
suggest those attending either utilize
designated drivers or other modes of transit where available, or
mostly taste rather than consume alcohol when such drivers or
alternative means of transportation are not available.
SEPTEMBER 17, HARBOUR
SQUARE CLUB, PFALZ TASTING
Dear Friends of German Wine,
Please join us Friday, September 17, at 7 p.m. for our tasting at
the Harbour Square Club Room, which provides us a stunning view of
the Washington skyline. The price for this tasting is $20 for
members, $27 for guests.
In years past, we (virtually) visited the Rheingau and the
Rheinhessen to celebrate and learn more about these regions' fine
wines. This year we visit the Pfalz, a region near and dear to our
hearts, and home of one of our national board's members - Alice Fitz
of Fitz-Ritter. It is an opportunity to experience wines from our
cellar and snacks representing the region. As with last year, your
pourers have undertaken considerable research to ensure your
experience is both delicious and delectable.
We're excited to be joined this year by fellow oenophiles from the
Goethe Institute. As we promote the understanding, appreciation and
knowledge of German wines, so the members of the Goethe Institute promote
knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international
cultural cooperation. At this tasting, we can do both ... together.
From Rudi Wiest: "The Mediterranean like climate and geographic
advantages of this sun drenched region makes the Pfalz a favored
climate for ripening grapes, fruits and vegetables. This "Tuscany
of Germany" is a paradise for noble sweet wines. The powerful,
distinctive character of Pfalz Riesling is derived from the stony
sediment of the Rhine, with the colored sandstone of the forested
Haardt Mountains and remnants of ancient volcanic eruptions." (http://www.rudiwiest.com)
And from our superstar, Terry Theise: "The wines have a great
affinity for food—certainly the most versatile of all German
wines—and yet they have an indefinable elegance." (http://www.skurnikwines.com/msw/documents/2010GermanCatalog.pdf)
The specific wines we'll be sampling are still being finalized, with
a balance between cellar selections and retailer offerings. Watch
your inbox, we'll be providing you the list in just a few short
days.
The address for our tasting is 500 N St SW, Washington, DC. 20024.
It is very easy to get to and park there. Just be sure to factor
in the horrendous bridge traffic. Which bridge you ask, take your
pick! Marilyn has thoughtfully reserved a few spaces in her
complex's visitors parking, but we cannot guarantee that these will
be available. Metro is very accessible, the Green Line, Waterfront-SEU, www.wmata.com.
The deadline is Wednesday, September 15. Please send your check
($20 for members, $27 for guests) with your reservation to ensure
your seat is reserved for you.
All Society members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption
can lead to intoxication, and therefore Society members and their
guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It
is advisable to provide designated drivers or other modes of transit
where available, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol when
such drivers or alternative means of transportation are not
available.
